Local author and folklorist Sylvia Shults returns to Washington District Library to speak about her latest book, 44 Years in Darkness: A True Story of Madness, Tragedy and Shattered Love. Rhoda Derry was committed by her family to an almshouse and lived in horrific conditions for forty years before being rescued by a doctor at the Peoria State Hospital. Expect a chilling history of mental health care and an intriguing look at our region at the turn of the twentieth century.
Take a walk through Washington Park and enjoy a story as you stroll! Beginning at the parking lot located on the Lincoln Grade School side of Washington Park, follow the sidewalk to read a story. This two-month session’s book is Love Monster by Rachel Bright.
