Washington will observe Memorial Day with a parade, followed by a ceremony at the Veteran's Monument in Glendale Cemetery on Monday, May 27th.
The annual parade will step off at 10:00 a.m. from the Heartland Bank parking lot, behind Lindy's Market, near the square. Parade participants are asked to arrive at 9:30 a.m. to begin lining up. The Washington High School Band will be marching in the parade and provide musical accompaniment at the ceremony following. The program will begin when the parade arrives at the monument in the cemetery.
Rides for senior veterans will be arranged by calling (309) 360-3727.
The public is invited to have "lunch with a veteran." A light lunch will be served at the VFW, 300 Zinser Place, Washington, following the program. The lunch is sponsored by Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory and Lindy's Market.
In the event that the parade is canceled due to inclement weather, the program will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the VFW Post.
The parade and ceremony have been jointly planned by teh Washington American Legion Post 100 and the Walker Danforth VFW Post 9016.
"Flags of Washington" will be on display along the parade route. Volunteers are needed to assist in putting up the flags the morning of May 27th. Anyone interested should call Gary Deiters at (309) 745-5999.
